1 How do you write to a friend who is far away? Today, most people write an e-mail or a text message or communicate through social media. Why not try sending a letter in the mail?

2 To mail your letter, you will need a postage stamp. A postage stamp is the price you pay for mailing a letter. In April 2016, a regular U.S. stamp cost 47 cents. Just stick one on the top right corner of your envelope, and you can send your letter anywhere in the United States. Make sure your letter weighs less than one ounce. If it weighs more, you will need extra stamps.

3 The first postage stamp was used in England in 1840. It was called the “Penny Black.” The price of the Penny Black was just one penny. It could be used to mail a letter that weighed less than half an ounce.

4 Before the Penny Black, mailing a letter was expensive. In England, people paid for each page they sent. They also paid for each mile the letter had to go.
