Inference and Perspective: Cracker's Story

In this assignment, you will practice making inferences based on a text excerpt. Focus on understanding the perspective of the dog, Cracker, and use evidence from the text to support your ideas. Your response will be graded on a 0-2 scale based on the clarity and correctness of your inference and the grammatical accuracy of your paragraph.

Reread paragraphs 3–4 of the provided excerpt. Use inference to explain what you think will happen to Cracker by the end of the story. Support your inference with specific details from the text.

I think the officer is strict and tough, but will be fair to Cracker. He’s sweet at first when he “coos” to her, “Nice dog. Good girl, Cracker.” Then he is pretty harsh when she snarls at him when he jerked hard on her chain. But I know from my own experience that you have to be tough with animals from time to time—it’s not mean, just firm. Also, the man is an army officer, and I know that officers have be tough to command soldiers. He commanded Cracker to “Sit!”
