Chief Joseph was a leader of the Nez Perce when the US government forced his people from their homeland. The Nez Perce believed their homeland was sacred, but the US government believed they had a right to own the land. This caused a war, and eventually the Nez Perce surrendered. After that, Chief Joseph spoke to important people in the US government. In his “Lincoln Hall Speech,” Chief Joseph explains that the Nez Perce value honesty and respect.
