What Madison failed to grasp is that in the very extended republic he was advocating, permanent majority faction gives way to temporary, transient factions of both the majority and minority varieties. Faction allies with faction to form majorities that further their own parochial interests at the expense of everyone else. Within each transient majority there is likely to exist a permanent minority faction or group of permanent minority factions at the core (e.g., the military-industrial complex, the banking cartel, labor unions and so forth), which transcends each episodic faction.
