Matter is anything that takes up space and has mass. Everything around us is made of matter, including air, water, rocks, and even you! Matter can be found in three main forms: solids, liquids, and gases. Solids have a shape of their own and do not change shape easily. Liquids do not have their own shape, but they take the shape of the container they are in. Gases spread out to fill the space they are given and do not have a fixed shape or volume.

Matter has different properties that help us describe and sort it. Some properties of matter include color, size, shape, texture, and temperature. For example, a rock can be gray, rough, and cold. Water is clear, wet, and cool. Air is invisible and feels light. We can also measure matter using tools. A ruler can measure the length of an object, a scale can measure mass, and a thermometer can measure temperature.

Matter can change in different ways. Sometimes, matter changes its shape or size, like when you cut a piece of paper. Other times, matter can change from one form to another, like when ice melts into water or water evaporates into steam. These changes can be caused by heating or cooling.
