CER: Identifying Plate Boundary Type Using Maps

In this assignment, you will use three maps to identify the type of plate boundary present in a specific region. You will make a claim about the type of plate boundary, provide evidence from the maps, and explain your reasoning. The maps show earthquake and volcano data for the same area.

  • Map 1: Geographic Data. This map shows the base geography of the area.
  • Map 2: Earthquake Data. Green dots show more shallow earthquakes, while red and pink dots show deeper earthquakes.
  • Map 3: Red triangles represent volcanoes.

Remember, in your reasoning, describe how the motion of the plates creates the features you used as evidence.

Map 2: Volcano Data. Red triangles show volcanoes.

Question 1a

Essay

CER Question:

Claim: What specific type of plate boundary is shown in the maps?

Evidence: Provide at least two pieces of evidence from the maps to support your claim. Be specific about what you see in the maps (for example, the pattern and depth of earthquakes, the presence or absence of volcanoes, any specific landforms you see).

Reasoning: Explain how the motion of the plates at this type of boundary creates the features you used as evidence. Describe how the evidence supports your claim about the plate boundary type.
