Biodiversity CER
In the heart of the Amazon rainforest, a diverse ecosystem thrives with an array of plants, animals, and microorganisms. This ecosystem is a complex web of interdependencies, where both biotic and abiotic factors play critical roles in the survival of organisms. Recently, an area of the forest experienced significant changes: a prolonged drought reduced the water availability, and illegal logging activities decreased the canopy cover, increasing the amount of light that reaches the forest floor. In this part of the rainforest, two species of birds, the Blue-beaked Parrot and the Green-tailed Hummingbird, compete for the same food source - the nectar from the vibrant Heliconia flower. The Heliconia, however, relies on specific conditions to thrive, including a certain range of temperature, light, and soil moisture. Given the recent environmental changes, there has been a noticeable impact on the population dynamics of these species and the availability of the Heliconia flower.
Question 1
Short answer
Describe how the changes in abiotic factors (quantity of light, water availability, and temperature) due to environmental changes have affected the Heliconia flower's availability, and in turn, how this has influenced the competition between the Blue-beaked Parrot and the Green-tailed Hummingbird.
