Animals live all over the world, from hot deserts to cold mountains and deep oceans. Each place where an animal lives is called its environment or habitat. Some animals live in forests, while others live in grasslands, rivers, or even underground.

Animals have special features, called adaptations, that help them survive in their environments. For example, camels have humps to store fat, which helps them live in the desert where food and water are hard to find. Polar bears have thick fur and a layer of fat to keep them warm in the freezing Arctic. Fish have gills to help them breathe underwater.

Some animals use color to hide from predators. This is called camouflage. For example, a chameleon can change its color to blend in with leaves and branches. Other animals, like skunks, use bright colors to warn predators to stay away.

Animals also have different ways to find food. Eagles have sharp eyes to spot prey from far away. Anteaters have long tongues to reach insects inside logs. Beavers have strong teeth to cut down trees and build their homes.

Every animal has adaptations that help it live in its environment. These adaptations help animals find food, stay safe, and survive.
