Voter ID Concept Application FRQ
Question 1
Ohioans voting in the November election will encounter tougher ID laws before they can cast their ballot. One of 12 states to pass tougher voter identification laws following the 2020 election, the laws went into effect in 2023. Previous laws allowed people who could not provide a photo ID to use a utility bill or another piece of official mail to verify their identity.
The new law accepts only four types of ID: Ohio Driver’s License, Ohio identification card, a U.S. Passport, or a U.S. military or veteran’s ID.
According to Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose’s office, more than 8,000 Ohioans have attempted to vote this year but their ballots weren’t counted because they didn’t provide an acceptable ID.
Sherry Polland, of the Hamilton County Board of Elections, said voters who don’t have any of the four can go to the Bureau of Motor Vehicles and receive a free State of Ohio ID.
