Informative Essay: Teach Us About Your Favorite Topic

For this assignment, you will write a five-paragraph informative essay about a topic you know a lot about. Your goal is to teach your reader about your topic in a clear and organized way. Remember to use facts, details, and examples to help your reader understand. Each paragraph should have a main idea and supporting details. Be sure to check your spelling, grammar, and punctuation.

Your topic should:

  • Be something you understand well.
  • Have at least three main ideas you can explain.
  • Be appropriate for school.

Choose a topic you know a lot about. It could be a hobby, an animal, a sport, a place, or anything you are interested in.

  1. Plan your essay. Think about what you want to teach your reader. Write down some facts and details you want to include.
  2. Write your essay in five paragraphs:
  • Paragraph 1: Introduction (Introduce your topic and tell why it is interesting or important.)
    • Hook your reader.
    • Introduce your topic.
    • Clearly state what the essay will teach.
    • Include a strong topic sentence.
    • End with a sentence that previews your three main ideas.
  • Paragraphs 2-4: Body Paragraphs (Each paragraph should teach about a different part (main idea) of your topic.)
    • Introduce the each main idea.
    • Include facts, explanations, or examples.
    • Write at least 4–6 sentences.
  • Paragraph 5: Conclusion (Summarize what you taught and end your essay.)
    • Restate your topic in a new way.
    • Summarize your three main ideas.
    • End with a strong closing sentence.
  1. Use complete sentences and organize your ideas clearly.
  2. Check your work for spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
