The Great Parade Balloon Adventure: Narrative Writing Assignment

Imagine you are a giant parade balloon in a holiday parade, just like the ones in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade! Suddenly, a strong gust of wind pulls you loose, and you drift away from the parade route. Your task is to write a narrative story from the point of view of the balloon, describing your unexpected adventure. Follow the instructions carefully to make your story exciting and detailed!

  • An introduction paragraph that introduces the characters, setting, and the problem (how you broke free).
  • Body paragraphs that describe your journey in chronological order.
  • A conclusion paragraph that wraps up your adventure and shows how you felt at the end.
  • Clear descriptions of events using sensory details (what you saw, heard, felt).
  • Properly punctuated dialogue (the balloon may speak or think, or you may include dialogue with people).
  • Emotions—Explain how the balloon feels throughout the adventure.
  • A strong narrative voice showing the balloon’s unique personality.
