Group 1

The Community Garden Club

Every spring, neighbors in Brookfield gather to work together in the Community Garden Club. They transform an empty lot behind the old firehouse into long rows of vegetable beds, raised planters, and colorful flower patches. At the first meeting each year, members make a planting schedule and a map of the beds, deciding which crops will grow where so sun and soil needs are met. Experienced gardeners teach newcomers how to start seedlings, when to transplant them, and how to recognize common pests and plant diseases.

The club builds a small composting area near the back of the garden. Members bring kitchen scraps from home — vegetable peels, coffee grounds, and shredded newspaper — and turn them into dark, crumbly compost that is mixed into the beds. To conserve water, the club installed a rain barrel system and laid out soaker hoses that deliver moisture slowly to plant roots. Tasks are shared: some people water, others weed, and a few focus on building and repairing raised beds.

During harvest season, the Community Garden Club holds a weekly produce table where members can trade or sell extra vegetables. A portion of each harvest is boxed and donated to the local food pantry and to families in need. The club also hosts monthly workshops for children and families, teaching simple lessons about how plants grow, the importance of pollinators, and basic cooking skills using fresh vegetables. Once a year they organize a community picnic and seed swap, celebrating the season’s successes and planning for the next year.
