- The sun rose high in the sky and warmed Earth. Birds were singing in the trees. Sophie woke up excitedly and ran to the window to look. "Spring is here at last!" she announced. "Finally I can go outside and play."
- It had been a very long, chilly winter. Sophie had been dreaming about all the fun things she would do outdoors when the weather improved.
- As Sophie raced toward the door, her parents stepped in front of her like a wall. "Wait one second, Sophie," said Mom. "You promised to help us clean the house once the weather improved."
- Sophie grumbled but remembered that she had promised to help with spring cleaning. "Okay, okay," she said, disappointed. "Where do we start?"
- All day, Sophie and her parents worked to clean the house. First she helped Mom clean the porch, where they found some of Sophie's favorite toys and sports gear. Then Sophie helped Dad scrub the doors and windows, which were dirty from dust and snow. That let the pretty sun shine brightly into the house.
- At last Sophie helped Mom take out their summer clothes and pack away their winter clothes. Sophie picked out her best T-shirt and shorts.
- It was a long day of working, and Sophie was too tired to play outside at all. The next day, though, she awoke to find more beautiful weather waiting for her. She excitedly checked the window and then raced toward the door. Once again, her parents stepped in front of her to stop her. Sophie worried that she would have to work again today, too!
- Instead, Dad handed her the T-shirt and shorts she had chosen. Mom gave her the baseball and basketball they had found on the porch.
- "See?" said Dad. "Now the hard work is done and you can have fun!"
- Sophie smiled and raced out the door, ready to enjoy the spring she had been waiting for.
