When Nomads Ruled Eurasia: The Rise of the Mongol EmpireWho Were the Mongols?

The Mongols were groups of tribes who lived in Mongolia, a region in East Asia, during the 1200s. They were nomads, which means they moved from place to place instead of staying in one location. They lived on the steppes, which are large, flat grasslands perfect for raising horses and livestock.

The Rise of Genghis Khan

In 1206, something amazing happened. The Mongol tribes held a special meeting called a kurultai. At this meeting, they chose a leader named Temujin to unite all the tribes. They gave him a new name: Genghis Khan, which means "universal leader."

Before becoming the great leader, Genghis Khan had to fight against other rival groups like the Kereit, Merkit, and Naiman Turks. He was smart and strong enough to defeat them all. Instead of just destroying these groups, he broke them apart and made the survivors join his own army.

Building the Empire

The Mongol army was incredible. They were expert horsemen who could fight while riding at full speed. Their first target was the Tangut kingdom of Xi Xia in what is now northwest China. From there, they attacked the Jin dynasty in northern China and then moved west toward Persia (modern-day Iran).

The Mongols had a simple rule: if you fought against them , they would destroy you. If you surrendered peacefully, they would let you live and sometimes even let you join their army. Many people from different cultures joined the Mongols, bringing new skills like engineering and trade knowledge.

How the Empire Worked

The Mongol Empire was organized like a giant army. The khan (leader) was at the top, and military power kept everything together. Conquered people had to pay tribute (taxes) in the form of animals, crops, or other goods.

Trade became very important during Mongol rule. They controlled the famous Silk Road, an ancient trade route that connected Asia to Europe. This brought wealth and new ideas to the empire.

The Yuan Dynasty in China

The most successful part of Mongol rule happened in China under Kublai Khan, who was Genghis Khan's grandson. In 1271, Kublai Khan created the Yuan dynasty in China. He built a new capital city called Dadu (now Beijing) and created a strong government with different departments for different jobs.

The Yuan dynasty lasted until 1368, when Chinese rebels overthrew the Mongols. Even after losing China, the Mongols continued to control large areas for many more years.
