Reconstruction and African American Freedom: An ICEE Response

During the Reconstruction era following the Civil War, the United States attempted to integrate formerly enslaved African Americans into society as free citizens. The United States experienced mixed results with achieving this goal. 

This assignment asks you to explore African American freedom during Reconstruction by looking at five primary sources from class. You will use the ICEE (Introduce, Cite, Explain, Elaborate) format to respond to the following question: Were African Americans really free during Reconstruction? You will be required to write at least 2 paragraphs with 2 different pieces of evidence proving your side.
