The Constitution created a federal system of government that divided powers between the national, or federal, government and the states. In the Articles of Confederation, the states held most powers. Under the Constitution, some powers are still left to the states, but the federal government has more power to act for the whole nation. This system is called federalism. The Constitution also contains a system of checks and balances. With this system, no single branch can gain too much power in the government. The Constitution also protects certain rights of the people.
