Cherokee Nation
Source 1
The Cherokee Nation is one of the Native American tribes in the United States. They have existed for thousands of years, long before Europeans arrived in America. The Cherokee lived in the southeastern part of the United States, in areas that are now North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, and Alabama. The Cherokee were skilled farmers, hunters, and gatherers. They grew crops like corn, beans, and squash, which they called the "three sisters" because they grew well together. They also hunted deer, turkey, and other animals, and fished in the rivers and streams. The Cherokee were also great traders and had trade relationships with other tribes and later with the European settlers. They traded goods like pottery, baskets, and animal skins for tools, beads, and other items. Spiritually, the Cherokee believed in the importance of balance in life and nature. They had a strong connection to the earth and believed in many spirits, including the Great Spirit, who they thought created the world. However, the arrival of Europeans changed their lives dramatically. In the 1830s, the U.S. government forced many Cherokee people to leave their homes in an event known as the Trail of Tears, where thousands of Cherokee suffered and many died on the journey to what is now Oklahoma. Today, the Cherokee Nation continues to thrive, keeping their customs, language, and traditions alive. They also participate in modern society and politics, making important contributions to the United States and working to preserve the rights and land of their people.
