Business Ethics Case Analysis
In this assignment, you will analyze a case study related to business ethics. You are required to write a Claim-Evidence-Reasoning (CER) response to argue whether the business in the case is acting ethically or not. Use evidence from the case study and what you have learned in class to support your argument. Ensure that your reasoning clearly connects the evidence back to your claim.
Group 1
Read the following case study carefully and then respond to the question below using the CER framework.
Case Study: Instagram and the Ethics of Social Media Engagement
Instagram, owned by Meta, is one of the most popular social media platforms in the world, with billions of users posting and engaging daily. The platform generates revenue primarily through advertising, and its success depends on keeping users engaged for as long as possible. In 2021, internal research from Meta (leaked by a whistleblower) revealed that Instagram’s algorithms were designed in ways that could negatively impact users—especially teenagers. Studies showed that Instagram worsened body image issues for teenage girls, contributed to anxiety and depression, and created pressure to seek validation through likes and comments. Despite having this data, Instagram continued to promote engagement-driven content, which some critics argue prioritized profits over user well-being.
In response to the backlash, Instagram introduced features like hidden likes and parental controls to help mitigate harm. The company also launched campaigns to promote positive mental health. However, some argue these changes were not enough, as Instagram's algorithm still amplifies content that can be harmful, such as idealized beauty standards or divisive content designed to keep users scrolling. While Instagram maintains that its goal is to connect people and enhance creativity, critics argue that its business model inherently encourages addictive behaviors that may not be in the best interest of its users.
Question 1a
Based on the provided case study, argue whether the business is acting ethically or not. Use the Claim-Evidence-Reasoning (CER) framework to structure your response. Your response should include:
- Claim: State your position on whether the business is acting ethically.
- Evidence: Provide evidence from the case study and your class learnings to support your claim.
- Reasoning: Explain how your evidence supports your claim, making clear connections between the two.
