Energy Flow in Grassland Ecosystems

In a study of a grassland ecosystem, researchers observed the flow of energy through various trophic levels. The primary producers in this ecosystem are various species of grasses, which are consumed by primary consumers such as grasshoppers. These, in turn, are preyed upon by secondary consumers like frogs. The frogs are then eaten by tertiary consumers, such as snakes. The researchers collected data on the biomass and energy content at each trophic level, noting that there was a significant decrease in energy as one moved up the trophic levels. They also observed that the number of top predators was much lower than that of primary consumers.

Question 1

Short answer

Describe the role of primary producers in the energy transfer within this grassland ecosystem.

Question 2

Short answer

Based on the data collected, explain why there is a significant decrease in energy as one moves up the trophic levels from primary producers to tertiary consumers.

Question 3

Short answer

Predict the impact on the ecosystem if a disease were to drastically reduce the population of grasshoppers, the primary consumers.

Question 4

Short answer

It is claimed that the introduction of an additional predator that feeds on snakes would increase the overall biodiversity of the ecosystem. Justify this claim using the concept of trophic levels and detailed reasoning.
