During the late 15th and early 16th centuries, Europe underwent significant changes that set the stage for the Columbian Exchange—the widespread transfer of plants, animals, people, ideas, and diseases between the Old World and the New World. Politically, European nations such as Spain and Portugal were becoming more centralized and powerful, with monarchs eager to expand their influence and wealth. The competition among these nations drove them to seek new trade routes and territories.

Economically, Europe was experiencing growth in commerce and the rise of a merchant class. Advances in navigation and shipbuilding made long sea voyages possible, while a desire for new resources, such as spices, gold, and silver, motivated exploration. The development of joint-stock companies allowed investors to pool resources and share risks, further encouraging overseas ventures.

Socially, the Renaissance had sparked curiosity and a thirst for knowledge about the world. The spread of new ideas, combined with religious motivations such as the desire to spread Christianity, inspired many Europeans to support exploration. Additionally, population growth created pressure for more land and resources, making overseas expansion attractive.

These political, economic, and social factors combined to facilitate the initiation and rapid expansion of the Columbian Exchange, fundamentally transforming societies on both sides of the Atlantic.
