Unit 4 Practice FRQ

Dr. Mathers recently conducted a study to explore how rewards and consequences affect homework completion in high school. She randomly selected three classrooms in a local high school to conduct her study. The Principal agreed to let her conduct her study. In the first classroom, students received extra credit points (a form of reward) every time they completed their homework on time. In contrast, the second classroom faced a different approach: if homework was not submitted on time, students lost access to a popular online learning game for a week (a form of consequence). In the third classroom, students received no extra credit or loss of access to the game based on when they submitted their homework.

The study aimed to determine if and how different approaches influenced homework submission rates. Dr. Mathers carefully recorded the number of homework submissions on time in all classrooms over a semester. All student information was kept confidential and no student names were recorded, however students were not informed that a study was being conducted.

After collecting and analyzing the data, Dr. Mathers observed a significant difference in the behavior of students in the classrooms. Classroom #1 (extra credit points) had a 70% homework on time submission rate, classroom #2 (loss of game) had a 90% homework on time submission rate, and classroom #3 (no extra credit or loss of game) had a 60% homework on time submission rate. Dr. Mathers concluded that the best intervention to increase student behavior in turning their homework in on time was to revoke access to the popular game if homework was no submitted on time.
