Ancient Realms - How does history inform and inspire us?
Read the following story and answer the question below.
Some people try to wave off history, saying, “That was then, this is now.” Others warn that if we don’t study history, we’re doomed to repeat it. They point out that when history repeats itself, it’s usually worse the second time around. We can avoid making the same mistakes by learning from the past, and we can also build on historical successes. Without thinking about it, we often turn to the past to figure out how to live in the present. Many women have been inspired by the success of the ancient pharaoh Hatshepsut. Hatshepsut became the first female ruler of Egypt during a time when female leaders were unheard of. Hatshepsut inspired leaders of the U.S. Women’s Rights Movement, which lasted from 1848 to 1920. It is likely that Hatshepsut was a source of inspiration for more recent female political leaders, as well. Golda Meir followed in Hatshepsut’s footsteps when she became the prime minister of Israel in 1969, as well as third female prime minister in history. Angela Merkel, the first woman chancellor of Germany, has led the country since 2005. Hatshepsut was a living, breathing hero, but historical figures from literature and mythology can also inspire us. We continue to turn to Greek mythology for guidance, and fictional Greek heroes like Hercules are still relevant. Disney’s 1997 hit animated movie brought Hercules to the big screen and immortalized his feats in a version that today’s children could enjoy. People around the world draw inspiration from mythical heroes unique to their culture. Even in the technologically advanced modern era, moral-heavy ancient myths remain useful. In this unit you will read about both real-life figures and mythical figures from the past that continue to seem relevant in the 21st century. As you explore these texts, you will consider what these heroes can teach us.
