Passage 1: The Benefits of More Recess Many experts believe that having more recess time helps students in several ways. First, recess allows kids to exercise, which keeps them healthy and strong. Doctors recommend that children get at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day, and recess is a great way to help meet this goal. Running, jumping, and playing sports help students build strong muscles and bones. Recess is also important for brain function. Studies show that students who take breaks and move around have better concentration in the classroom. After playing outside, kids return to their desks feeling refreshed and ready to learn. More recess could help students focus better on their schoolwork and improve their test scores. Another benefit of recess is that it helps students develop social skills. During recess, kids learn how to work together, solve problems, and make friends. Playing games with classmates teaches important lessons about teamwork and fairness. Without enough time for recess, students might miss out on these valuable experiences. In addition to social skills, recess can also improve students’ mood and mental health. When kids spend time outside in the fresh air and sunshine, they often feel happier and less stressed. Taking a break from schoolwork allows students to relax and return to class with a positive attitude. For all of these reasons, many believe that schools should extend recess time. More recess could lead to healthier, happier, and more successful students. When kids have enough time to play, they may even perform better in school!

Passage 2: The Importance of Classroom Learning While recess is important, some teachers and parents believe that students already get enough time to play. They argue that adding more recess could take away from important learning time. Schools have a lot to teach, and students need enough time in the classroom to practice skills like reading, writing, and math. One concern is that longer recess could make it harder for students to stay focused. If recess is too long, students might have trouble settling down when they return to class. Teachers have noticed that some students struggle to concentrate after an extended break. Keeping recess short helps students stay in a learning mindset throughout the day. Another issue is that not all students enjoy recess the same way. Some kids may feel left out if they do not have close friends to play with. Others may not like outdoor activities or find recess stressful. If more time is added to recess, these students might not benefit as much as others. Additionally, increasing recess time could take away from subjects like art, music, and science. Schools only have a limited number of hours in the day, and adding more recess could mean cutting time from these important subjects. Teachers want to make sure students get a well-rounded education. Because of these reasons, some people believe that the current amount of recess is just right. While recess is fun, learning in the classroom is what prepares students for the future. Keeping recess the same allows kids to play while still focusing on their education.
