Understanding the Impact of Greenhouse Gases on Glacial Melting and Earth's Albedo
Question 1
Essay
Long Valley Caldera in eastern California is a supervolcano that was thought to be long extinct. However, in 2018, scientists found that it still holds over 1000 cubic kilometers of molten magma. Although it’s extremely unlikely, it’s possible that Long Valley Caldera could erupt again. Among the other effects of a super eruption like this is the addition of large amounts of CO2 to the atmosphere. As CO2 is a greenhouse gas, this could lead to an increase in global temperature that could in turn cause glaciers to melt in the Cascades, the Sierra Nevada, and around the world. Typically, glaciers have a very different surface reflectivity than the underlying terrain. Think about the effect of air temperature on melting glaciers and the effect of melting glaciers on air temperature. To help you build an understanding of the feedbacks and melting glaciers, you will construct and revise a scientific argument.
