Class Bottle Experiment - Claim, Evidence, and Reasoning

After reading through the experiment described below, make a claim supported by evidence and reasoning.

Group 1

Source 1.1

A group of students plans to paint the clear plastic shed that is used to store tools and supplies for the schoolyard garden. They want to cover the outside of the shed so that the temperature inside stays relatively comfortable during the different seasons. The diagram shows the sun at its highest point in summer and in winter.

Source 1.2

The students conduct an investigation to find out which colors absorb or reflect light, using plastic bottles. They add 1 liter (L) of water at a starting temperature of 21°C to each bottle. Their experimental setup is shown.

Source 1.3

The students take temperature measurements after 30, 60, and 90 minutes. The graph shows the final temperature of the water in each bottle.

Question 1a

Short answer

Based on the experiment shown above, which two colors would work best for the roof and walls in keeping the shed cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter? Support your claim with evidence and reasoning.

Question 1b

Short answer

Identify the two different paint colors you identified from the experiment for the roof and walls. Choose the property that best describes each color (absorption, reflection, refraction). Explain how each color demonstrated that property in the experiment.
