Unit 2 EQ: Systems of Power and Privilege

In this assignment, you will write a Claim, Evidence, and Reasoning (CER) response to one of the essential questions about the roles communities play in systems of power and privilege. Use the guidelines provided to structure your response, and ensure you incorporate at least three of the specified terms to achieve a higher grade.

Directions: Answer ONE of the prompts below using appropriate evidence from class to support your answer (see the rubric on Classroom for more guidance). You may fill in the blue sentence starters or write your own. Be sure to include AT LEAST 2 pieces of evidence (3 if you want an A) and explain how they support your claim.

  • Claim/Topic/Thesis: This is your thesis statement. You restate the question and then provide your argumentative claim.

Essay

Select one of the following options and write a CER response:

  1. What roles do communities play in celebrating cultural values and resisting injustice?
  2. How do marginalized communities organize to resist systems of power and privilege that maintain inequality and oppression?
  3. How do communities challenge policies or laws that reinforce privilege and/or institutional oppression?
  4. How do cultural celebrations, such as festivals and traditions, serve as acts of resistance against stereotypes or institutional oppression?

Ensure your response includes:

  • A clear claim or thesis statement.
  • At least two pieces of evidence, with explanations on how they support your claim.
  • Use of at least three terms from the list: Power, Oppression, Ideological, Institutional, Interpersonal, Internal, Marginalized, Stereotypes, Resistance.
