Unit 1 Assessment: Short Written Response

Unit 1 Essential Question: "How are our identities shaped and continually evolving?"

Directions: In this unit we examined the ways in which Native Americans, African Americans, and Mexican Americans were discriminated against and marginalized in society. All three groups struggled to succeed and find their place in society, while trying to maintain their identity and culture because of the extensive barriers they faced.

Group 1

Part 1: Pulling from the list of readings below, write a 5-7 sentence written response to the assessment question. Your response needs to mention at least 2 of the 3 ethnic groups, and must be in RACES format with at least 2 pieces of evidence.

Part 2: Once you have completed your response, you need to label the different parts of the paragraph using the following highlighting key:

  • Topic Sentence (R and A): Highlight yellow
  • Evidence #1 (C): Highlight purple
  • Analysis #1 (E): Highlight green
  • Evidence #2 and more (C): Highlight purple
  • Analysis #2 and more (E): Highlight green
