Construct a Claim Writing Task

In this task, you will state and defend an opinion about a specific topic that has two opposing viewpoints. You will select one position and support it with clear reasons and examples.

Group 1

Instructions:

  1. Choose a Topic: Below are topics that have two opposing opinions. Decide which position you support.
  • Should students have homework every night?
  • Is technology more beneficial or harmful in the classroom?
  • Should school uniforms be mandatory?
  1. State Your Opinion: Begin your paragraph by clearly expressing your opinion on the chosen topic. Make sure to state your position clearly. You can use first-person pronouns (I, me, etc).

  2. Support Your Opinion: Provide at least two strong reasons to support your opinion. For each reason, include specific examples or details that reinforce your argument. Think about:

  • Facts that support your claim.
  • Personal experiences related to the topic.
  • Logical reasoning that connects your opinion to the reasons.
  1. Organize Your Ideas: Structure your paragraph logically. Start with your main claim, followed by your supporting reasons and examples. Conclude with a statement that reinforces your position. Use transition words and phrases such as: therefore, however, furthermore, overall, in summary, in conclusion, etc.

  2. Review Your Work: After typing your paragraph (4-5 strong sentences), take a moment to read it over. Check for clarity, organization, and grammatical accuracy.
