The Role of Violent Imagery in Society

Question 1

Essay

What purpose do violent images serve? When is it appropriate to show shocking or horrific events that happen to others? Read the following sources and accompanying information carefully. Then, in an essay that synthesizes at least three sources for support, take a position that defends, challenges, or qualifies Sontag’s claim that we should view images of violence only when viewing leads to action or knowledge. Use the sources to support your position; avoid mere paraphrasing or summary. Your argument should be central; the sources should support your argument. Remember to attribute both direct and indirect citations. You may refer to the sources as Source A, Source B, and so on, or by the description in the parenthesis. Authors, titles, and publication data are included for your convenience.

Perhaps the only people with the right to look at [graphic war] images of suffering of this this extreme order are those who could do something to alleviate it…or those who could learn from it. The rest of us are voyeurs, whether are not we mean to be.
