Analyzing Rhetoric in Mandela & Malala
Read both speeches closely: “I Am Prepared to Die” by Nelson Mandela and “Nobel Peace Prize Speech” by Malala Yousafzai. Then write two analytical paragraphs as described below. You may choose which speech you use for each appeal, but each paragraph must focus on a different speech.
Group 1
Write two analytical paragraphs following the instructions below. Each paragraph should be 6–8 well-developed sentences, incorporate at least one piece of textual evidence, and explain how and why the rhetorical appeal strengthens the speaker’s message. Use a formal academic tone.
Question 1a
Paragraph 1 – Pathos: Analyze how one of the speakers uses pathos (emotional appeal) to persuade their audience. Identify a specific moment or quotation. Explain how the emotional appeal works and why it is effective.
Question 1b
Paragraph 2 – Ethos: Analyze how the other speaker uses ethos (credibility/authority). Identify a specific moment or quotation. Explain how the speaker establishes trust or moral authority and why it matters in the speech.
