After the Seven Years War, Parliament and King George III implemented various revenue generating acts on the North American British Colonies, the Stamp Act, quoted below, was one of the first.
An act was made in the last session of parliament, granting duties towards defraying the expenses of defending the British colonies in America. It is necessary to raise further revenue within your Majesty’s dominions in America...we, the commons of Great Britain in parliament assembled, have resolved to give and grant unto your Majesty the several rates and duties...That from and after the first day of November, one thousand seven hundred and sixty five, there shall be raised, levied, collected, and paid unto his Majesty...For every skin or piece of vellum or parchment, or sheet or piece of paper...a stamp duty of ten pounds...For every skin or piece of vellum or parchment, or sheet or piece of paper...a stamp duty of four pence...And for and upon every paper, commonly called a pamphlet, and upon every newspaper...the respective duties following.
