Question 1

Essay
For this assignment, you will write an essay on TWO of the social psychology topics listed below. Your essay should be divided into TWO paragraphs, each focusing on one of the topics you selected.

In your own words:
1. Describe the topic you chose.
2. Discuss the factors that cause it.
3. Discuss multiple factors that influence it.
For example, the theorized cause of the bystander effect is a diffusion of responsibility, but time pressure is an influencing factor. If bystanders are in a hurry or pressed for time, we see an increase in the effect.

Next, write about a time that you experienced this topic.
4. Report how it made you feel.
5. What did you do to resolve or alleviate the situation?
6. How has it changed your cognitions and behaviors since? This should include the emotional impact, resolution strategy, and reflection on change.

Respond to the prompt for BOTH topics in TWO separate paragraphs.
Cognitive Dissonance
Foot-in-the-Door Technique
Conformity (identify motivation: normative or informational social influence?)
Social Facilitation (not covered in our textbook - if you choose this topic, be sure to use a website as your citation)
5
Social Loafing
Bystander Effect
Discrimination (of any sort)
Racism
Homophobia
10
Sexism
